Sector 1 – Critical Computing

The Critical Computing implementation sector covers the computational aspects related to HPC (High Performance Computing), HTC (High Throughput Computing), and Big Data. It proposes and organizes activities within general projects to provide infrastructure, innovative implementations, and to develop expertise for upcoming challenges within our institution's most significant projects.

The sector is divided into two main axes:

Axis 1: PNRR Centro Nazionale HPC, Bigdata and Quantum Computing

This involves the majority of INAF structures. In particular:

It promotes the training of a new class of technologists and researchers in the field of HPC computing, moving toward Exascale, and in Big Data management and analysis.

Axis 2: Computing Infrastructures for Research

External Infrastructures:

Agreement with Cineca for the use of Leonardo and contribution to the acquisition of the new Tier 1 at the Bologna Technopole, scheduled for late 2024 – Leonardo@CINECA

Allocated share of the new Tier 1 at the Bologna Technopole expected for 2025.

Internal Infrastructures:

The system of Pleiadi and (starting in 2025) a Tier 3-sized system for data storage and archiving located at the Bologna Technopole.

Cagliari Astronomical Observatory: Computing infrastructure linked to the upgrade of the Sardinia Radio Telescope (structure reserved for the PON-SRT).

Note: Access to computing resources is granted through the submission of a proposal: Call for Computing Resources.
