Creation of a Scientific Computing Unit (USC-C) represents a vital strategic opportunity to keep INAF at the forefront of current and future research. This initiative not only enhances the excellence already operational across the Institute’s various structures but also enables the development of a fully integrated computing ecosystem.
Supported by targeted investments in hardware and personnel, the USC-C will pursue several key objectives:
Coordination and Synergy: Harmonizing distributed expertise across the territory to create an effective bridge between human resources dedicated to small-to-medium scale projects and large-scale national and international infrastructures.
Competitività Internazionale: Ensuring the technical requirements essential for the full exploitation of the observational programs and theoretical simulations in which INAF competes on a global scale.
Sector Leadership: Consolidating the Institute’s leading role in high-performance computing, as evidenced by its significant weight within the new National Research Centre for HPC, Big Data and Quantum Computing (ICSC), where INAF leads one of the 10 Spokes and directly participates in three others.
While this is a gradual process, the convergence of INAF’s scientific and computational souls provides all the necessary requirements for a cohesive effort. The success of this evolution will yield tangible benefits not only for INAF members and their projects but also for the cultural and technological advancement of the entire country.
