INAF/USC-C is pleased to announce the course corso “Computing and High Performance Computing in Astronomy and Astrophysics Course“, which will take place in Catania which will be held in Catania from September 22 to 26, 2025,at the Catania Astrophysical Observatory, Via Santa Sofia 78, 95123 Catania (CT).
High-Performance Computing (HPC) is a cornerstone of modern Astrophysics and Cosmology,, essential for modeling dynamic systems, analyzing observations, and formulating theoretical predictions. The massive volume of complex data collected by next-generation observatories requires innovative theoretical and computational tools to investigate physical phenomena with unprecedented detail.
The course is designed to provide young researchers in Astronomy and Astrophysics with practical skills in programming and code optimization across various computing platforms, including parallel computers, laptops, and modern CPUs. The primary goal is to develop expertise in the effective use of computing resources for numerical modeling and data analysis, with a focus on: code optimization, distributed memory parallelism, shared memory parallelism, and efficient use of computing infrastructures
This initiative recognizes the growing importance of a conscious and proficient approach to computing in advancing astronomical research.
Organized entirely by INAF-USC-C,, the course is free of charge and open to approximately 30 participants..
However, participants must independently cover their own travel and accommodation expenses.
Should the number of applications exceed the available spots, selection will be based on the candidates' skills and background, with priority given to young researchers and post-docs.
Additional editions of the course will be organized in the following months to progressively meet the training needs of INAF personnel.
